Janice Sugg is a Colorado native-- growing up in Denver and living now in the Longmont area. She has been a Colorado artist for more than 25 years. Initially, she was a successful career potter; she painted colorful, abstract wildflower designs on her handmade white stoneware. She has three grown children and is an accomplished horsewoman.

In 2001 Janice changed media to devote her time to oil painting. She paints in her studio near Longmont, Colorado. In addition to studio painting she paints outdoors using on-site plein-aire techniques. The landscapes she paints are near the Boulder/Longmont area where she lives, in New Mexico near Taos, and in Estes Park.

Her imagery depicts an abstract sense of landscape, using multiple layers of paint texture, with colorful brush stokes, often depicting mountain scenes. Many of her paintings depict birds, as well as horses and cows grazing.

Artist Statement
“My style is rather impressionistic. I am not concerned with making my scenes look absolutely real. The emotions I lay down on canvas when I’m painting and the feeling they evoke is more important to me.”

“I’ve always loved Colorado and consider painting in the West a great inspiration and privilege, as well as a challenge and adventure. I enjoy revisiting my favorite locations; painting them in different seasons and at different times of day. Anything that inspires me is a possibility for a painting. I like to keep my compositions simple and emotionally drawn. I’m inspired by nature, art, poetry and philosophy.”

“I am especially attracted to the mood and atmosphere about me when I’m painting outdoors. I search for contrasts of cloud and landscape, of light and shadow--the unique color palate composed of the ever changing light. I often feel I have become absorbed in the environment. For a painter there is nothing better than sharing my experience with others and seeing their reaction to my art.”
